Grandfather and grandson Afghan - Photo Meloni Beauchamp
We have this week with the expert in military affairs Charles "Chuck" Beauchamp. Chuck is retired Sergeant Major and Vice Chairman of Soldiers' Affairs Enlisted Association of the U.S. Army.
With him is the future of Iraq and Afghanistan, and in retrospect, the reasons that led to the occupation of both countries. We talk about Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and military scenarios in the region.
In response to whether the real reason for U.S. presence Afghanistan could be the prompt action of his troops in a hypothetical scenario where control of the Pakistani arsenal happen to hostile groups (Talibanization of Pakistan), Chuck summarized in a letter to the current Weekly Online potential of the military forces of the United States:
Battle Groups By Charles "Chuck" Beauchamp Chuck Beauchamp The U.S. has 11 aircraft carriers. At all times, three of them are deployed alongside a fleet of cruisers, frigates and a reinforced battalion of Marines (USMC) patrolling the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It takes between 24-48 hours to reach anywhere on the planet. This is why they come so soon to places where natural disasters occur to help. In addition, the Army maintains combat brigades on standby in Europe and the USA. The vanguard of those forces are ready to leave four hours after being notified, the rest of the brigade takes between 12-18 hours to unfold. In different parts of the world, the U.S. has war supplies and equipment pre-season. Many of them in transport ships that can sail to meet with troops flying to the scene of the crisis with only his rifle and personal equipment. The fleet that patrols every ocean is composed of an aircraft carrier that carries 30 to 50 combat aircraft, of 3-7 cruisers / frigates, submarines equipped with missiles, ships loaded with supplies and transport for the infantry. It also has helicopters and amphibious vehicles to transport the infantry to ground. The infantry battalion has its own artillery, transport, engineering and aviation support. American troops are prepared to fight for weeks to be reinforced or relieved of the mission. They call this a "Battle Group". Every six months on patrol stop at different ports and places where they do exercises and drills to practice each type of mission they can get. The island of Vieques in Puerto Rico was one of the sites where they played. The "Battle Group" includes a hospital ship with all sorts of doctors, surgeons and surgical wards. The ability to deploy military forces anywhere in the world is part of what makes the U.S. a superpower. The British and French can do a limited basis. If the crisis of which we speak arises, these forces could intervene much quicker and better prepared than those in Afghanistan. |
Puerto Rico - Coat of arms
In the second part of the program we spoke with Beauchamp on the referendum that will make the Puerto Ricans in deciding, first authorized by the U.S. Senate, on changing the political status of associated statehood. This referendum would precede another on the full integration into the U.S. as the 51st state or independence as a nation. Thus, we analyze the change of positions on the subject that have experienced the Democrats and Republicans in recent years.

Almost all U.S. Latinos have reacted in unison against the law signed last week by the Republican governor of Arizona Jan Brewer. The Senate approved the southern state and the active involvement of law enforcement in controlling illegal immigration.
The 1070 law defines several new crimes that affect not only affect undocumented people but even to those connected with them. To size the case could highlight the following points:
- The law comes at a time when the Obama administration is preparing to undertake a comprehensive immigration reform.
- The immigration powers belong to the federal government.
- The implementation of the law involves racial segregation in identifying the suspects.
